But Walsh said there are some areas where women still need to make inroads. For example, no woman occupies a top-line play-by-play or analyst role at one of the major networks. Walsh also noted that women continue to be scrutinized more than men in sportscasting. In a recent ESPN Chilton Sports Poll, 65 percent of the respondents said viewers are tougher on women sportscasters.

"Women can't afford to make the same mistakes men can and recover from them," Walsh said. "When a woman makes a mistake, the male audience says, 'Ah-hah, I told When Chris Berman makes a mistake, the audience says 'Ah, he just missed that "That particular burden hasn't been lifted from them entirely. It'll take a longer period of time for that to change, but I hope that it will." Where is Gardner, whd left ESPN for NBC in 1987, is now with the New York-based Television Food Network. She's the co-host of a nightly call-in show titled Getting Healthy. Not just another Saturday night: The Baseball Network debuts on ABC Saturday with regionalized coverage of 14 games.

WTSP (Channel 10) will broadcast the Marlins at Atlanta. The venture by ABC, NBC and baseball will feature updates and cut-ins to no-hitters and milestones. But to broadcast that many games will be a daunting task for ABC and NBC, which takes over for ABC in August. "College football is similar, but nowhere near the extent of this," ABC Sports executive producer Jack O'Hara said. "The most football games we've ever done simultaneously, in recent memory, was six.

With baseball, we'll be doing up to 14 at once. It's complicated, it's hectic, but that's what's going to make it great." LIMITED QUANTITIES riri WW tribes i 00 oo IS 11 When ESPN hired former CBS reporter Lesley Visser this week, the network touted itself as one of the leaders in helping women sportscasters break down barriers. The claim is easily substantiated. ESPN has helped women succeed in the industry by hiring reporters with exceptional sports knowledge and allowing them to use that on more than just fluff pieces.

"ESPN has been the most progressive entity in hiring women to cover pro football," ESPN reporter Andrea Kremer said. "ESPN has not stereotyped me by assigning soft features. It has let me discuss game strategy I'm encouraged to use the knowledge and contacts I've obtained in my 12 years of covering the NFL." ESPN has been at it for 15 years. Gayle Gardner, who became one of SportsCenter's top anchors in ESPN's early years, is considered one of the female pioneers in sports broadcasting. She displayed a depth of sports knowledge and strategy, but her smooth delivery indicated she wasn't throwing facts and figures to prove to viewers she knew sports.

"For TV, (former CBS sportscaster) Phyllis George was the pioneer, but Gayle Gardner was the role model," Visser said. "She was the first woman viewers were comfortable with. She was widely accepted." Several other women have established credible careers at ESPN. Visser joins Kremer and Pam Oliver, who used to work at WTVT (Channel 13). Robin Roberts will continue her role as a commentator for NFL PrimeTime.

"I'm aware of how good Andrea, Pam and Robin are, because I've been out there competing with them for stories," said Visser, who became the first woman to handle an NFL beat when she covered the New England Patriots for the Boston Globe. "Back then there were no provisions for equality. I was out in the parking lot with families waiting for athletes. "For one company to have four woman covering the NFL is really astounding." John A. Walsh, ESPN executive editor, said the network simply tries to get the best person for the job.

Why should a kid who needs a life jacket to stay afloat have to swim against someone like Clara, who can swim 100 meters and do flip turns? "The real world to us is competing at your own level.

The practices, the workouts, that's the real world. All of life is developmental. This is a developmental phase. These kids are at their ability, competing against other people of their ability, and winning and losing, and that's what life is all about." "I don't think I've ever been around an event that warms your soul as much as these Games do," said Bucs coach Sam Wyche, honorary chairman of the Games. "The kids are children sometimes they're adults that are just not used to being recognized in a positive way.

That's very special to them." Brazeal said she has tried for years to let people know that "this is sport, not just some diversion, not some way to get people out of the house. This is the world's largest amateur sports program 127 countries and all 50 states, close to 2-million people in all. "We've got 964 people ages 8 to 82 registered in Pinellas County at all skill levels, from those in motor-activity training programs, not ready for competition, to those who play as well as high school players and might be on their high school teams were it not for a mental handicap. They understand winning and losing and all this ribbon business. They're just like regular kids in that respect." Clara Glass is in many ways typical of the competition, even if she is at the high end athletically.

She is 23 and she is shy, but not averse to speaking her mind. Just like the budding Nicole Haisletts of this world, she has days when she would rather not be in the pool. "Sometimes I feel like that," Glass said. "Sometimes I tell my mom, 'I don't want and she tells me, 'I think you should go swimming; you should always finish what you and she gives me that look that mothers do." She shrugged. "So I go swimming.

"This makes me feel good," she said with a nod toward the pool. "I know I can win and all that." Kay Glass adopted Clara 14 years go. "When I got her, she had no friends. She had always seen herself as different. Her goal was to have a job, which she has, to be on her own, and basically to be what she calls a regular person, a normal person.

She used that word a lot when she was little. Special Olympics has given that to her." Clara Glass has been competing since she was 10, and she has won her share of medals. More important, both she and her mother said, it has enabled her to find a widening social circle and to feel better about herself. She is educable-mentally handicapped. She is a Pinellas Park High School graduate.

For two years she has been a pre-kindergarten teacher's aid in the county school system, working with disabled children. She works with computers. She is trained in CPR. She drives to work each day. "Still," her mother said, "I'm not sure, even now, in the '90s, that most people are as accepting of the mentally disabled as they should be." Said Brazeal: "I always tell everyone: 'Don't be afraid to be around these people.

They are not contagious; you won't catch anything except a little more.
